Restoration & Conservation of Heritage Building at Yasmar Training Centre
Client: Soil Conservation Services – Crown Lands Services
Status: Completed August 2017
Contract: MW21 D&C
Royal Contractors had the opportunity to work on this significant heritage building, built in 1858 and part of the broader Yasmar estate which was used as a juvenile justice facility up until its decommission in 2005. The building, and its gardens are listed on Register of the National Estate and the NSW State Heritage Register.
The project required the extensive restoration of the original exterior sandstone walls, steel columns and timber joinery, and the removal of asbestos and layers of lead paint. Exacting restoration techniques, without the use of any chemicals, required flexibility and a trial-and-error approach with Royal Contractors working closely in consultation with various heritage consultants. Site management required the sensitive removal of wastes and protection of the heritage-listed gardens surrounding the building.
Project Challenges include:
- Staged remediation works
- Extensive asbestos remediation
- Significant lead paint removal utilising natural materials
- Significant meticulous preparatory works
