Embarking on a monumental endeavour, Downer Group leads the charge in rejuvenating Melbourne’s iconic tram fleet at the Historic East Preston Depot. With the first of 450 trams nestled within its walls, a meticulous process unfolds: each tram stripped to its bare frame, poised for an extensive overhaul to extend its lifespan by a decade or more. At the heart of this transformation lies the comprehensive upgrade of East Preston Tram Depot, a feat requiring the meticulous removal of asbestos, the meticulous removal of vinyl, and detailed demolition of existing structural steel. To ensure safety and efficiency, a specialised asbestos removal work area ‘bubble’ has been erected, minimising the release of airborne fibers and ensuring the preservation of both history and health.
